Sodastream Home Carbonator

Last week we bought a SodaStream “Fountain Jet” home carbonator.  It’s wicked-cool.

Being able to make seltzer and other fizzy drinks at home in a matter of seconds is definitely the way to go!

Here’s how it works: The carbonator sits on your counter, and is about the same size as a coffee pot or blender.  It doesn’t need electricity, so there’s no need to plug it in (and no cord).  It holds a small CO2 tank in the back, which is good for about 60 liters of beverages.  They use special 1-liter BPA-Free bottles that look like regular soda bottles, but are a bit sturdier.

Simply fill the bottle with cold water, attach it to the carbonator, push the button for about two seconds, and… BAM! Instant Fizzy Water.

It makes for a great presentation at dinner parties, too.

They also sell a variety of “soda mixes.”  Since I still have a craving for Coke Zero every so often (I’m ashamed to admit), I thought we’d try their “Cola Zero.”  Simply add a capful of the syrup to the already-carbonated water.  (Though I must admit that it’s just not the same as Coke Zero… close, but not quite.)

The regular soda flavors all have a combination of sugar and artificial sweeteners, and are lower in caffeine than regular soda.  Their primary sweetener is Sucralose, which is generally considered safe by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.  However, some of the syrups also contain Acesulfame-Potassium, which CSPI says to avoid.

Of course, it’s far healthier to add some fresh lemon and lime, or perhaps cucumber & mint, or maybe blackberries…you get the idea.

Prices start at $90.  They have a couple of “fancier” models, but they all do the same thing.   Be sure to check out the bundled savings from the “value packages,” which include extra bottles, CO2 tanks, or drink mixes.

Full disclosure: This is a product I personally use and enjoy, and think you will too.  If you click on the links in this post and then make a purchase from Sodastream, I’ll earn a small commission.  Thanks for your support!
