Today I want to mention a handful of other ingredients, usually used in small quantities, but collectively, they’re in a whole awful lot of the foods most people eat. Many of these are used in extremely small amounts in any given product, but over time I believe those small quantities can really add up.

Upon my doctor’s recommendation, I went to our neighborhood pharmacy to pick up some Listerine mouthwash. I was excited to find the bottle of “Listerine Naturals.” Inside the bottle was a clear liquid, a noticeable contrast to the impossibly blue “Cool Mint” version sitting on the shelf next to it. Eager to figure out the difference between the regular stuff and the “natural” version, I started comparing the labels.
All five tastes–sweet, sour, bitter, umami, and yes, salty–can be found in whole foods. Let’s break it down–then let’s make an unprocessed bloody Mary and put all five tastes to good use.
The food industry adds salt, sugar, fat, “natural” and artificial flavors, flavor enhancers, and even texture enhancers to make food products not just palatable, but hyper-palatable.
